I saw this the other night before going to bed and got the camera out.
I slapped a no4 close up lens on, zoomed out halfway and popped the flash up.
God I love this camera!

I think its house spiders and other small true soiders she's scared of. People tend to have a fear of the small rather than the large. Its irrational but part of their 'programming' and shoud not be ridiculed.(Not that I'm saying you're ridiculing mary of course! )
My older brother hates spiders, but is curious about them and wanted to see pics of my Ts.
I think Ts are far less scary than true spiders because they have long spindly legs and look 'creepy' I suppose.

Al, I have a 39 year old son who comes running when they get out, he also puts the males and females together, moves them from tank to tank etc, oh I can deal with tiny slings but that is my limit.

Thanks Becky, but I am scared of em all lol. It's the long front legs coming towards me yuk.

lol.. i don't like the way "spiders" scuttle.. T's kinda run.. don't scuttle as much.. thats what creep me out.. and im a fan of chunkier legs... don't like trues coz they got skinny lil legs.. or if they're out of proportion..
If they've got small bodies they've got huge legs! And if they got small legs they got massive bodies.. yuk..

Tegenaria are cool spiders indeed ...big, lanky and a little scary looking!
Do the females settle in or do they wander around a region like reclusa seem to do?

Cause they are fascinating Al, I love to go into the spider room late at night and see them going quietly about their business. It's not a bad thing to scared of them either, that way they don't get hurt from mishandling..........

Al i think its like people who go on those scary rides at funfairs. They scare them to death or even make them sick but they have to go on them! (Not me,no way!) Another example is mountain climbers who risk their lives to get to the top. Its dangerous and scary but irresistible!

Ahh i love big scary rides! But im so skinny and have such small hips that i have to hold on extra tight coz i nearly fall out under the bar and move around in the seats so i always come out with bruises on my hips lol! not good when your god knows how high and upside down!! Makes it all the more scary hahaha love it! :P

The original pics on this thread are of a female Tegenaria, noting the palps! Both sexes find a suitable spot outside to make a web and live there for 4-5 years for a female and 2-3 for a male (depending on how quickly he matures), he then searches for a mate which can accidentally take him indoors where he is noticed (unlike males of smaller species), hence 'house spider' (somewhat erroneously). If a female grows too big for the hole in which her retreat is situated (normally after a moult), she searches for somewhere else, and this can lead to the rare occasion where a female is actually seen indoors. This will be the case with yours - the fact that she is so skinny is due to not feeding through lack of web and also probably through having moulted and is too big for her home, hence having a wonder.

Yep, and at first i believed it to be T.domestica, until i saw drawings of the male palps and emboli, which made me look closer. And so I strove to get a close up photo of the emboli of this spider and then managed to confirm its ID as T.duellica.
Quite a proud moment that!

Although the palps on the original pictures will have no emboli give the fact she's a lady! The name has reverted back to T.gigantea now instead of T.duellica. A current concern regards the spread from East to West in higher numbers for T.saeva which have been hybridizing with T.gigantea in Southwest UK, which is affecting population data. Boring fact of the day! :p

Tegenaria

Yea I've had numerous Tegenaria but the one with the emboli was the only male i found. theyre nearly all female! So duellica is now officially gigantea! Isnt that the hobo spider in the states?

mambo
22nd-August-2008, 23:12
No the hobo spider is T.agrestis, we get it over here but lives away from urban areas. The name means 'mat weaver of the field' ('agre' as regard to agriculture) and not 'aggressive' which most people presume, often given the bite reputation! Not quite so boring fact of the day :goof:
