Jay, for most people its the things between the palps in Phoneutria that are the scary things!
And Niklas i don't blame you for not trying to poke her out!

You're right. Phoneutria spp. do require a DWA in the UK :)
You know that reminds me of Hartley, but fluffier.

15th-May-2007, 20:44
That is not strange Mary since both Ancylometes and Phoneutria belongs to the same family, Ctenidae.
Ah, I thought there was a similarity Niklas.

Yea that looks like a brown widow and I'm guessing that mactans is the Black Widow right?

Yea that looks like a brown widow and I'm guessing that mactans is the Black Widow right?
No, that one looks like the classic black widow ...L.hesperus. They vary from jet black to a nice redish/chocolate brown (and even more extreme variations exist)
Mactans can have a more brownish abdomen also, but usually it is a bit towards a creamier red brown, but on the side of crimson instead of normal red. I'm not basing my ID on color necessarily, because its not wise to rely on a pic, but thats a factor. The hr glass is much more hesperus than mactans and if Im seeing things right she has a small and very thin red dorsal line, which is not common with macs. Macs can have a short line or single dot leading to the spinnerets, but it will be wider, more crimson and usually more pronounced all together... not faded or broken up. Again, Im looking at a pic and not the actual spider. A photo of her topside would help.

Its not WC. Not that I know of. I bought it as mactans. No idea on what it is.

That Thelctiocopis is stunning. Where do these come from?
(actually, my first thought at seeing the piccie was 'cupiennis'. Any connection?)
Tarantula
30th-May-2007, 20:26
They come from Malaysia. Their common name is "Malaysian golden huntsman".
There is no connection between Cupiennius and Thelctiocopis they belong to two diffrent families. Cupiennius belongs to Ctenidae (same as Phoneutria and Ancylometes for example.) but I dont know to wich family Thelctiocopis belongs to. Not Sparassidae that I am sure of.
Gigas
30th-May-2007, 20:49
Thelcticopis Is a Sparassid Niklas
Also I am doubtful that the animal is a thelcticopus, Its sits like a Rhitymna sp. have you got images of its spinnerets?
Tarantula
31st-May-2007, 15:18
Hmm yes now I found them on the Spidercatalog!
Well Im sure it could be something else, big mess with these type of spiders. Dont have any other pics than the ones I posted, but I can try to take some later.
Gigas
31st-May-2007, 17:40
It is very messy between these spiders I do agree, some people say thelcticopis have short setae and rhitymna have long and some say the other way round, I wish someone would give a definate answer! I bet we find out that some sp have long and some have short in both cases....

I don't really know a great deal abaout true spiders and was wondering what she could be, the only difference i can see between that one and the one that was in the cricket box is that this one has a brown blaze down her back, i have a pic but i need to upload it. Its good to feed them a diverse diet. Crickets dont necessarily have everything a spiders needs. And, one can imagine that in the wild she would probably live out her entire life with never eating a cricket.
