I found this chap near my front door as I was getting ready for work.
At first I just passed it off as some tiny sling but on closer inspection I saw the boxing gloves, its an adult male! Had a look in my book and the closest I could get was a member of the Linyphiidae, which includes money spiders.

Thanks Glen but at 2.5mm its far too small for a Zygiella. I managed to get an ID for it tho,its Theridion mystaceum

hi Larry,

I missed the size comment you made mate. Although, I don't think its Theridion mystaceum. It's very hard to confirm with small Theridids. I would only be able to confirm it if it was in alcohol so you could position the palp on the scope. I've got a couple in my preserved collection and the palps are a lot darker. If you still have it could you get any clearer shots of it? The Collins field guide is a great resource but I try not to rely on the images so much as they lead me to so many wrong ID's at first. The palp and epigyne ID is the only way to be sure and on a 2-3 mm spider you need to be using x20 min

Thanks Glen the ID came from a guy on AB, and i checked in my guide and confirmed it. Cant get any closer as Im using my phone and a loupe to take the pics. Could get it under my microscope but would have to kill it and thats not something i do.

ugghhh, ugly perisher init???

theyre not ugly at all, theyre cute and fluffy, just keep saying that in your head ;)

Jay that looks like the Zigiella x notata Glen mentioned.. It makes the classic web but leaves a section blank with just one extra thick line leading to the middle.(the x notata part of its name)

What's the deal with all these negative vibes towards araneomorphs?!

Hi mambo,a lot of people hate spiders yet like Tarantulas, something I find hard to understand really. Tarantulas are spiders too of course but I think a lot find them cute because they are big and hairy-except when they're slings of course ;)

Oh come on lads, you know I am sacred of anything with 8 legs Larry, I am only just beginning to put dwarf spids together and pot up slings, but can't stand them on me yuk. Yes I do have trues too.

Ah mary you're one brave woman, you admit you fear spiders,Ts included, yet you breed them and educate others about them. You're quite an inspiration!

I forgot to do this one, it's actually Theridion melanurum, I posted a comment on your new blog though. Also just to confirm Jay's Zygiella x-notata. Hopefully I can successfully promote positive attitudes to our lovely araneomorphs!

here here, the natives seem to be forgotten and looked down upon by a lot of tarantula keepers. but these are fascinating creatures
