T. gigantea slings = S. grossa baby food :)
I have to say for an Arachnophile on a budget you can't do better that a Tegenaria sac. I keep three females and a male I have had from an Egg sac I found in my shed. The male is like a household pet and sits on my desk most of his life.

I had a huge Tegenaria female lay an egg sac in a tank I was keeping her in once. They are very defensive things, the female used to bite anything that went near her eggs. Eventually I moved the tank outside because I didn't want a spider explosion in the house! I took the lid off so that the female could leave when she felt ready. A few weeks later I looked and saw loads of tiny shed skins in the tank and no spiders, they'd all gone off the nether regions of our shed!
I found a tiny little Tegenaria running across our landing the other day, and decided to keep it. I'm going to see if I can raise it up to be one of the dreaded bath-dwelling monsters that we all love the sight of when we go into the bathroom in the morning!:P

Is it me, or are they getting rarer though?
I can remember a few years ago, seeing them a lot, but now it is quite rare.
Any thoughts?

They are in our house Howard, the 'daddy longlegs' one eat them all, thats why we kill dll on sight.

Statistically speaking they are getting more common. This mild weather we get in late autumn is causing them to be able to breed longer and later in the year.
If we are talking about T. gigantea (duellica) that is.
I do think they are getting bigger though. My three females are massive, wide leg spans with huge abdomens. They are housed in clear plastic `safer` cases from Tesco and have Green Florists Oasis as houses. They seem to thrive like that and eat anything that comes near them.
I made my Trapdoor Spiders really cool burrows from Oasis and I never, ever see them. I'll take some shots of them tonight as the Oasis stuff is my favorite house sculpting medium right now.
