Hello all!
I was on a show in Stockholm today. Not a big one but I bought afew new bugs..
Bought this Fishing spider. Adult female about 4" in legspan. Will decorate an enclosure with small pond so I can feed her with small fish if sometimes. :) Will also have a land area she can walk around on. Pond will be about 1/3 of the terrarium size. I think it will be really cool! But it will take some time before I can start since I need to get some stuff first.
Here is afew pics of her you can look at untill I post the enclosure pics and all that! :goof:

acylometes are ctenids too?
Looking at the eye structure and leg shape i would say yes

Yes they are a member of the Ctenidae same as Phoneutria so I think it may be a good Idea to watch your fingers.. just in case.
Yes will take pics of that! :D
BTW Chris they occur from Nicaragua to Bolivia according to WSC.

Martin Goss has a few I think. He will be at AES so I'd be happy to try and get you a male if he has one.

I'm happy to get one (no problem) but I'm seriously worried about what I would do with ONE fish-smelling arachnid let alone hundreds of the little buggers..lol
I mailed Martin anyway. I asked if he has a male to reserve it for me so I'll let you know at the weekend. Fingers crossed.

Nik,
Looks like I should be able to pick up a male and a female Ancylometes bogotenensis Saturday. I'm not sure if this species has a tendency to harm the male after mating so I need to do some research, any info?. It would be cool if we could get a male to service your new female and one that I aquire. Either way, if I manage to get an adult I'll get him sent out to you. I've reserved em anyhoo.

Nik, Not sure if you saw my post at Arachnoboards. I have a bit of bad news mate. The pair of Ancylometes bogotenensis I had is now a single Female Ancylometes bogotenensis. I fed her for a day and dropped him in. She ignorded him so much that I turned my back to do other stuff. She, at some point in the evening must have decided he was lunch. I have no idea if they mated or not as I didn't say anything. He was drumming a a bit so maybe.
I'm really sorry that you now won't get your male and I sorry I'm out of pocket by 20 quid. I really hope they mated. How long do you think gestation would be for these guys?

That is some bad news indeed, but it doesnt matter hope he mated with your female mate!
I am not sure on the incubation time but is shouldnt be very long I guess. True spiders dont have very long incubation time.

I've got to say she is a feisty little minx. I kinda hope I goet no sack as she scares the hell out of me. She's eaten her husband, three Ex large crix and a locust in 4 days. Talk about getting the munchies.....She's a pig! I would have thought hubby would have lasted her all week. I didn't even get to give her a fish yet. And on another point, where the hell am I'm going to get a fishy that no one will miss. I'm not buying fish for her to try. Maybe I'll nip down to the local pond and do some dipping. Stickle backs are too dangerous for her I think so maybe small roach. I'll let you all know.
Becky

or minnows hehehe

I'm gonna feed her on Tax collectors, traffic wardens and politicians. Better than minnows...lol

What is the expert opinion? Gravid or not? She seems a whole lot bigger around the ass and she's spending lots of time on the couch eating crisps!!!! lol
http://www.southerngfx.co.uk/arachnid/true_spiders_world/Ancylometes_bogotenensis004.jpg
In fact, I think she is going to start wearing stretch pants she's getting that big!!
http://www.southerngfx.co.uk/arachnid/true_spiders_world/Ancylometes_bogotenensis003.jpg
Nik...does she look gravid to you mate? Or is this wishfull thinking? She has slowed down a lot this week. Any tips if she is? I know nothing of this species. She is spending loads of time in the water even if there is no food in there. Reckon she needs a burrow to produce a sac? I have bark strips in there but no actual burrow to speak of.
I hope she is gravid as it will make up for losing the male.

Glen they spin an egg ac then carry it around in their fangs

16th-October-2006, 15:13
She is indeed very fat. How long was it since she ate the male? Could be the male that makes her look fat.
Glen Southern
16th-October-2006, 15:44
I thnk it's wishful thinking. She only ate him a week ago. I'm sure it would be fast with a species like this but not this fast surely?
Tarantula
16th-October-2006, 16:11
yes that sound to fast. Would gess atleast 3 weeks.
Mary
16th-October-2006, 16:25
It only took our false widow 2 weeks chaps!!!!

Yes Mary, but they are a complete diffrent family and genus so they cant be compared to these.

Yes, but still a true spider Niklas.
Glen Southern
16th-October-2006, 20:07
I rehoused her late last night and I have to say her abdomen is HUGE. I know this would be fast be she grew so fast in a week. If she is bigger again in a weeks time I will indeed be picking the nursery colors as suggested. If not, at least she is well fed with her husband in her belly.
Mary: It was only two weeks from mating to sac for the Steotoda? Thats fast. I'll have no room soon...lol
Mary
17th-October-2006, 03:37
Yes, only 2 weeks Glen, it was a shock to see the egg sacs so soon.
Glen Southern
20th-October-2006, 10:03
No sign of anything yet even though she is getting fatter. Maybe just the amount of food she eats.
BUT....Here is some confirmation of gestation time for this species. The breeder (who I got the stock from) has had great success and quotes 12 days for the Egg sac to be produced and 10 days to hatch. SO....if it happened I should see a Sac by the weekend. If not, I need the healthy Male of his. :)
I'd love to get a good crop of these little beauties and share them around. They are really fun to watch and are quite big for true spiders.
The ones we mated all got down to it fairly quickly. In fact most of the time the female actually seemed to go up to the male and plonked her self down in front of him (come and get it big boy). Mating itself seemed to take about 10 minutes or so and then the female sat and cleaned herself up. Thats when we removed the males. Even the one male that seemed to not know what to do didn't get attacked after rolling off the peice of bark with her in his arms.
Gestation was about 12 days before the egg sac was laid and about 10 days to hatch.
Now have 3 large clutches of young :-)
So....I am determined to get a Male for Nik one way or the other.

WE HAVE SAC-SIGN!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So, last night (9.00pm) my little Fishing girlie made a Web hammock, upside down on the roof of a plastic flower pot. This morning she is holding a flattened looking egg sac!!!! Woohoo!!!
So now, do I remove or not. I've no idea with this species. I have a really cool incubator setup for Steatoda/Latros etc. so it would be no problem to house the sac in there but I don't know if the sac needs turning for a few days as with T's.
Any ideas folks?

GRATS GLEN!!! :D Great news!! Hope it all goes well. Get some pics asap :D x
Glen Southern
24th-October-2006, 19:47
Now, do I remove or not? She is not going to let go of that sac easily let me tell you!!!!
If this was Tom and Jerry I would get Jerry to stand on her tail thus forcing her to open her mouth to scream! I forsee a few issues with this plan as;
1. I don't know any clever Mice
2. She has no tail
3. She has `I will bit you` written all over her face.
Any suggestions for Safe-Sac removal based in reality would be welcomed. :)

Weyhey Glen! nice, your best bet in my eyes is asking around AB, a few europeans there have bred this spec so you may have better luck.
Goodluck what ever you do!

Advice seems to indicate leaving her with them but give her loads of sticks to allow her to build a nursery hammock. I really could do with re-housing her so I can photograph the event but I am worried about her eating the sac if I p&*s her off too much. By Martins (Breeder) calculations they will be hatching in little over a week so I need to make some descisons today really. The tank she is in isn't the best for access and photography.

Personally Glen, I would leave her where she is, forget the photography for now (although by the recent pics, you're not doing a bad job!) and use this as experience.
Then if or when you breed her next time, have her in a different tank.
Good luck with it mate!

She is doing very well at the moment and the sac seems to still be intact. I decided to move her to a better enclosure as I found some really good information about this sp. and it seems she will build a nursery web for the babies. I am keeping the humidity very high but there was no vertical room for her to build and suspend a 10cm web/hammock. I now have her in a large round tub with some height and loads of sticks for web attachment.
Here is a great info sheet on these arachnids:
http://www.isopoda.net/articoli/ancylometes_guyana.html
They seem like a great species to keep as they are big enough to make a cool enclosure and have them on diplay and they breed quick enough so you are not sat around waiting for months. I've really enjoyed having her in my collection.
