The Tarantula - An Ideal Pet
Mythical Monster
Although a difficult task, I will attempt to dispel the many myths and inaccuracies attributed to the tarantula. Endless are the possibilities as to why these creatures have come to inherit such a bad reputation, but there is no doubt that the movie industry is partly responsible for making them out to be the vicious cold killers that they are not.
The Tarantula As A Pet
In many ways, the tarantula is the ideal "holiday" pet; meaning that all but the more sensitive species can go, without problem, for a couple of weeks requiring little or no attention. They do not "foul" the lawn, dump partially decomposed mammals on your doorstep, carry smells and disease,
Do Your Research
If you want a 'pet' tarantula it is important that you research the topic beforehand, to what extent depends on any prior knowledge and experience keeping other inverts or exotic pets.
Types: Arboreal, Terrestrial, Burrowing
Generally there are two types here; they are Terrestrial; ground dwelling species that live beneath rocks or logs and perhaps construct burrows, or those found in trees known as Arboreal.
Sizes: Spiderlings, Juveniles, Sub-Adults or Adults

Environmental Requirements
Temperature
Most species will thrive in a temperature range of between 23° C and 28° C. If you are fortunate enough to live in a part of the world where this is the 'norm' then this should not be a problem. However, for many of us here in the UK, it is! Heat must therefore be supplemented in someway to ensure that the internal environment is maintained at a comfortable level, and temperatures do not fall outside of the extreme minimum/maximum of 15° C and 35° C respectively.
Insert a number in either input field, and the number will be converted into either Celsius or Fahrenheit.

Humidity
Humidity requirements will vary amongst species, therefore it is recommended that the aspiring hobbyist researches the climatic conditions for the country of origin. Further consideration must be allowed for the Type; (ie Arboreal live in tree tops where it is less humid, and Terrestrials on the ground or in a burrow where it is more humid). Suffice to say; it is a subject of much debate amongst keepers, and many will have their own individual opinions that are not necessarily right or wrong.
Below is a list of sites which you may find useful for researching average climatic conditions across the world:
